Special Olympics and Making Connections

on September 22, 2015

The last few weeks during Reading, we have talked a lot about making connections. We have talked about text to text, text to self, and text to world connections. Why do we do this? How does making connections make you a stronger reader?

It is time to start making connections around the world! Your job this week is to comment on this blog using good, strong comments.

Think about the story we read about the Special Olympics and watch the video below. HowΒ are youΒ similar to the young people that participate in the Special Olympics? How it must feel to train for these events? Think about the challenges these Olympians have faced. Visit this link to see a video about Susie Doyen. Can you make any connections to her feelings or experience? Write a comment about your thoughts!

Remember to use C.U.P.S., use an address like “Dear Class,” or “Hello Friends,” and end with a closing such as “Love, Mrs. C.” or “Your Friend, Sevey”.

    DEAR CAMPAGNA,
One of the connections is when I stared first grad I was in a new school and I did not know anybody but I met Laila and that when I stared talking to people.

    • Dear Kylee,

Wow! So you can really understand how someone might feel when they are new to something and afraid to share their thoughts and ideas. I can imagine moving to a new school was very difficult. Isn’t it interesting also how you mentioned that after you met Laila you started to come out of your shell? This tells me that it only takes one person sometimes to make a difference in the life of another. This is a good lesson to learn when we see someone who is having difficulty or someone who is new or someone who has special needs. Thanks for sharing!
      Love,
      Mrs. C.

    • Dear Ava,

I’m glad you can understand how difficult this might be and how Susie might have felt. Can you think of a time when you were afraid to speak or share your ideas? Can you think of a time when someone made fun of you? We’d like to hear your connections.

      Love,
      Mrs. C.

  9. lailal says:

    Dear Mrs. Campagna’s class,

Making connections makes me a stronger reader because I can relate to the story and understand it better. I am similar because in the video it said that they perform in front of a lot of people. In dance I perform in front of people doing lots of activities. It must be hard for them to train because they have to do things differently from other people.

In the video she found something she liked and became good at it it was golf. That happened to me to but with dance.

    love,
    laila

    Dear Mrs.campanga
I think Susie felt scared and sad because kids would make fun of her when she said something wrong. I have a connection to her life is… when I fist started playing soccer
I was trying to give it my best shot and I got a goal. If I where to meet Susie Doyen I would be happy and be friends with her.

  11. Jada says:

    Dear Mrs. Campagna,

It must be hard to not be able to talk. Susie must have felt scared and sad. She is lucky she learned to talk. If I had to go through that I would feel the same. She must have to face golf, a lot of work, running, and big crowds cheering. She is very brave.

    Love, Jada
