Ballpark Estimates

on October 14, 2012

One of the topics we have been learning about in Math is Ballpark Estimates. Let’s work together as a class (including our friends around the world) and have a discussion about estimates. Answer the questions below to share your knowledge with the world!

What are Ballpark Estimates?

Why do we use estimates?

Can you think of an example in the real world where you would use an estimate ?

Give two examples of number sentences and their ballpark estimates.

I can’t wait for you to show what you know!

    Dear Campagna,
Ballpark estimates is where you find the bigger number and then you find what the bigger number is close to. Then you go to the smaller number and find what that is close to. And then, you put it together and make it a problem and slove it and do the other problem that was there to help you do the ballpark estimate.

  2. Lauren K. says:

    Dear Mrs. Campagna,
A ball park estimate is an answer that is close to the real answer. It helps you solve a problem. You would use an estimate to figure out how much money you have to spend at the store.
    10+42= estimate 50
    20+69= estimate 90

    Lauren

    • Madison says:

      Dear Mrs. Campagna,

You can use ballpark estimates to make math problems easier by rounding the numbers. You could use ballpark estimating when shopping to figure out if you will have enough money at the check out.
      36+41= 80
      15+27=50

      • Madison,
Those are great examples of ballpark estimate answers, but how did you decide the answer would be 80? or 50? How did you determine that 36 would round up or down? I look forward your response!

        Love,
        Mrs. Campagna

  3. Emma says:

    Dear class,
Ballpark estiments help you a lot because they get you close to the number thats the real number. But some times the number isn’t even close.example.
    real problem 49+36= 85
    ballpark estiment 50+40=90
    See.
Lots of times ballpark estiments can be really close to the real problem example.
    real problem 41+30=71
    ballpark estiment 40+30=70
    See.
Use ballpark estiments they will really helpful. You can use them every day.

    sincely,
    Emma

  4. Mallory says:

    Dear Class,
Ball park estimates help you in math because it could make you a better estimater when you grow up. I can give you an example of a ball park estimate

    Problem:46+56=102
    Estimate:50+60=110
your estimate should be close to your problem. So if it was not close, you probably did something wrong on your real problem. When you do ball park estimates always make sure that your estimate is close to your answer.

    Sincerly,
    Mallory

  5. lid says:

how do you ballpark a number ending in 5 leave it or get it close to 0 example

    485 + 55
should I make it 490 or leave it at 485 or 480 same with 55 do I make it 50 or 60
